A trip in search of humpback whales

In the first months of the year, thousands of humpback whales gather in Samana Bay, offering a unique show that is repeated every year in the Dominican Republic . These whales, also called Abertamy, going from mid-January until the end of March in the warm waters of Samana Bay in the North to mate or have their babies . This is an opportunity to see these wonderful creatures in their natural habitat and enjoy a unique tourist attraction in the Caribbean.

Whales travel thousands of kilometers from the seas of Iceland, Greenland and North America to finish their journey in the Gulf of Samana. Surprising bulkiness of these bulky animals that can weigh 40 tons, jumping on the waves, and then falling on them. This is how males behave, arousing the interest of females, while producing characteristic sounds that can be heard within a radius of 30 kilometers around the water.

Between 11 and 12 months after mating, whales return to the same waters to give birth to their young. Calves that weigh a ton at birth offer the most gentle image, swimming and playing around their predecessors. Every day they consume 200 liters of breast milk and gaining about 45 pounds. it is Important that these young people were rapidly strengthened to have the opportunity to meet the difficult journey to the colder waters of the Northern hemisphere.
